Do you need the vaccine for cervical cancer?

Everyone is paranoid when they hear the word cancer. Regardless what kind of cancer it is, when someone heard there is a vaccine for cancer, they all want it. This including my mum. Last year, a new HPV vaccine was developed that is effective against cervical cancer. She drags all of us to her O&G doctor to get vaccinated but of course her gynaecologist told us it is not necessary for us to be vaccinated. (Yea, me and my sis are good girls ok?). Before getting this vaccine, we should learn more about cervical cancer.

What is cervical cancer/ carcinoma of the cervix?
Cervical cancer is malignant tumor in the cervix (structure between vagina and the uterus).
The peak of incidence occur between the age 20-30.
Worldwide, about 500,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year, resulting in 250,000 deaths.
We should understand that Cervical cancer is not cause by hereditary.

Nearly all cases of cervical cancer is caused by Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. When someone got infected, this virus causes a short period of symptoms and then it disappears without any treatment. This virus persist in the cervix epithelium for years and gradually changes the genetic apparatus of the cells and then leads to excessive proliferation of infected cells and formation of intraepithelial neoplasia.

Who is affected?
HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease. It usually infects any young people (age 16-30) that are sexually active with multiple partners. The incidence is highest in developing country such as India, Thailand; where prostitution of young girls is very high. The ratio of cervical cancer to breast cancer in these countries is 3 : 1.

People at risk of acquiring this infection are people who:
- started sexual life at a very young age (<17 yrs old)
- has multiple sexual partners
- had unprotected sex without condoms
- has husband/partner who previously has a wife died because of cervical cancer (yes, this virus love glans penis, it lives and multiplies there and this infected penis will be the carrier of this HPV infection)
- has medical history of STD

*Gays can also be infected with HPV but since the location of poking will be different, they will get anal cancer.

Smoking increases the rate of malignisation of cells. Don’t think that holding a cigarrette, naked in bed with some cute guy is cool. It can kill you. (I think nowadays people watch too much drama series. tsk tsk, this is bad, very bad.)

The incidence of cervical cancer is almost none in virgins.

Who needs the vaccine?
This vaccine is recommended to female age 13 - 26 years old. The younger the better, before she start having sex. The vaccine will activate immune system against HPV before she is expose to the virus. (If you plan to engage in a lot a lot of sex act with many guys in future, I think it is better to be vaccinated.)

The vaccine is given as a series of three injections over a six-month period. The second dose is given two months after the first dose, followed four months later by the third dose.

Women that are already sexually active, this vaccine will still be effective, it reduces the risk of transformation of cervical epithelium into cancerous cells.

*boys age 9-15 yrs old can be vaccinated as well if you suspect he has tendency to be homosexual to prevent anal cancer.

Are you in the risk group? Then you will need the vaccine for sure. On the other hand, other girls (virgin/non-virgin) can consider taking this vaccine as a prophylaxis.

********************************************************************
Some unrelated facts. I was talking to my groupmates the other day about this issue. They mentioned about this:

You know how conservative is Malaysian thinking. Uneducated people will think; if girl go and take this vaccine, it means that she surrender herself telling the whole world that she is a slut that sleeps around with guys. So in the end, she might just swallow down her throat the thinking to be vaccinated to save her dignity. Educated people will think it’s for their health and they must do it to protect their lives.

There are so many enjoyable and beautiful things in life, do you really want to take the risk and die so early? Go get vaccinated if you think you need it. Life can only live once. Prolong it and enjoy to the fullest and die with no regrets.

Bra and breast cancer.

A lot of people ask, “should I wear bra or not?” as wearing bra according to a research carried out in the US in 1995 can increase the incidence of breast cancer.

bras.JPG

The Good is….
Women wear bra so that they can maintain the good shape and support their breast tissue. When we exercise or participate in any heavy physical activities, we feel pain if we didn’t wear bra. So bra act as support when we are involve in physical activities.
As for appearance, none of the girls and their bf/hubby want their breast to be sagging like Mariah carrey’s. Afterall, breast is part of the sexual organs, it suppose to arouse the opposite sex to make love with you, ya know… for the sake of continuation of the human species. So your breast gotta be in beautiful shape right? To know if your boobs are in good condition, do the pencil test. Place a pencil below your breast, if the pencil did not drop means your boobs are sagging because it’s holding the pencil in the place.

The bad is….
According to the theory presented by Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer as published in their book, Dressed To Kill.1, elastic or tight fitting garments (the bra) constricts the lymph vessels which are very delicate and close to the surface of the skin. The function of the lymphatic system is to wash away the toxins that accumulates in the individual cells via lymph fluid. When you compressed the lymphatic vessles, toxins accumulates and after a long period of time it causes mutation of cells which predispose to development of cancer. Most benign lumps and cysts found in the breasts are largely composed of lymph fluid and it was reported that women diagnosed with these lumps could often have these lumps completely disappear by ceasing to wear their bra for several weeks.

But….
Women that wear bra less than 12 hours have risk for breast cancer less than 1%. Women that wear bra to sleep (24hours) have 99% of risk to develop breast cancer.

Women that wear tight-fitting bra (such as push up bra or the bra size is too small for you) have 40% risk to get breast cancer.

Exercises such as walking, running and any activities (picit-picit maybe?) that moves the breast also aid in movement of lymph circulation in the lymphatic vessels.
When the lymph is moving —> toxins move along with it —> removal of toxins from cells —> breast cells are free from toxic agents that can cause mutation of cells which will lead to cancer.

So….
- Wear bra during any time of the day when you are involve in any physical activities (working, dating, clubbing etc etc).

- Choose a suitable bra for yourself, the suitable Cup size, types (with wire or non-wired, padded or non-padded, full cup or half cup). Big boobs should wear full cup with wire and non-padded (this one the aunty dat sell bra teach wan). Oh, push up bra is bad bcos it compress the lymph vessels tightly. So girls with smaller boobs, if ur guy ask u to wear push up bra so dat it will appear bigger, he’s an ass. Dump him! Whether A cup or C cup, it doesn’t matter, if he loves you, love come from the heart not the eyes.

- Don’t wear bra longer than 12 hours a day. When you are at home, sleeping, relaxing, you can go braless or run naked anyhow you want. And one thing about not wearing bra is, our breast tissues are hold in place by ligaments, we wear bra to help our ligaments support our breast but once in a while we need to go braless to train our ligament to hold the breast tissue so that it will not depend on bra too much and forgotten its own function.

- Regular exercises to improve the lymph circulation. (If not enough time to go exercise….. then mah ask him to help picit-picit lor like what ShadowFox said… it works effectively also.)

- Diet. Less goreng-goreng food. Less oily and fatty food. Less red meat, more white meat. More vegetables, fruits and anti-oxidants (most potent is Green Tea).

I believe that in whatever that we do, there should be a balance to it just like our diet. We need carbohydrates, fats and proteins. So do our breast, sometimes we should wear bra, sometimes we should go braless. Like guys also, they don’t wear underwear to sleep wud. (Old old tales from grandmother say if guys wear underwear to sleep, their balls will shrink wor. True or not? Tell me about it.)

Anyway, I hope after reading this, everyone can keep their breast beautifully in shape and breast cancer free. Thank you for your attention!

Age for cancer is getting younger.

In 2 hours time, Ruth will receive her 1st course of chemotherapy in sunway medical centre. She is 19 years old, from Philippines and now currently studying in malaysia at Taylors college. She was diagnosed with breast cancer on 13th Feb this year and underwent a simple mastectomy on her left breast on 21st Feb 2008. Today 21st March, she will begin her chemotherapy. Ruth is very brave, despite everything that happened, she still going strong and was prepared to face the unbearable pain from the chemotherapy. She approached me to help prepare her for the coming side effects that she will face.

Breast cancer more frequently develops in women at older age, 40 years and above. But these days, the manisfestation and development of cancer become earlier.

XiaoYun, my ex-cassmate in primary school had Ovarian cancer when she was 19 in year 2005. She had 1 side of her ovary resected and underwent 9 months course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
YuinYin, I myself had acinic call carcinoma in June 2007 when I was 21.
The boy in the same ward with me (I forgotten to ask for his name), 20 years old, had cancer of the nose.
Ruth, 19 had breast cancer, will be going for her first chemotherapy today.

4 different young people, 4 different kinds of cancer.

Don’t think that because you are young and still have a long time to enjoy life, you won’t get cancer. Cancer picks anyone to be its victim. Have you done a full medical check up lately? There will be cure if cancer is detected at early stages. If you feel discomfort somewhere, do not hesitate to go for a thorough check up because symptoms of cancer are very general that you might not notice it. I’ll list the general signs for cancer in the next post.

The world that we are living in today is not the same like last time.
Polluted air, polluted water.
Irradiation everywhere (from things that we use daily - handphones, microwave oven, computers, TV)
Unhealthy diet full of MSG - instant food, snacks.
Stressful life - due to work, studies, social

All these factors can trigger development of cancer .

I got extra 1 hour today.

Today I slept extra 1 hour. I woke up at 9.30am thinking it’s 10.30am. So from now on, the time difference between Russia and Malaysia is 5 hours.

It’s getting colder as well today. November coming. Usually the 1st day of snow will on Deepavali night every year. I remember this because I have to run to the Deepavali concert under the snow in whatever I’m wearing (cheongsam, saree, punjabi suit etc etc).

I have only another 4 days left to study for paediatric final exam. *stress *stress until pain in the head, pain in the ear, even arse also pain. At one point I thought I must have contracted some disease from the patients in hospital. Acute otitis media. Diptheria. Whooping cough. Meningitis. In case I fainted and never woke up one day, then you know why la.

I’m immunodefficit person now. Sometimes the teacher forgot about this fact. Even in children hospital, diseases which will only affect small children because they have weaker immune system also can affect me. I have been coughing non-stop for 3 days now. Don’t know which day, in which hospital I got infected. Pokoknya, I have classes in hospital everyday. Maybe I should go see a doctor but the procedure here is very troublesome and wasting time so during this busy period, I can’t afford to waste even 1 minute doing nothing. And don’t bother to ask my teacher, they are not helpful at all.

I have to study for Oncology, infectious disease and paediatrics in a day. I wish that 1 day consist of 48 hours. Time is not enough for me. I somehow feel very tired and exhausted due to my immune status now. I hope all my effort now is really worth it. When I reach home in winter, I hope someone would treat me good meals. I miss Korean and Japanese food.

And I miss him very much. How nice if I could fall asleep in his big arms now.
Right now I am still debating with my jealous father about me going over to UK for Valentine’s day because I might have to sacrifice spending CNY at home. BUT I have 5 weeks at home already, not too much to ask for if I only spend 7 days in UK with Ken right? Not like my parents will give me EXTRA big angpao if I stay at home for CNY. I know my friends, they all have generous relatives which give them minimum rm50 for angpao money. Hell, I have rich aunts but they are super kiamsap as. Even when I tell people, I got only rm10 angpao money from my aunt also they would laugh at me. =_= So does it matter at all to celebrate CNY or not? Some more, all the food eaten during CNY are very oily and unhealthy. I’m sure my mum will restrict this and that again, so what’s the point of celebrating? No money, no food.

Romance, suprises, Ken. I prefer this one.
