Operating theatre in russia.

Today was the 1st time I enter OT(operating theater not overtime!) this semester after 1 month i’m back to Kursk. The patient was a woman with a lot a lot of problem with her uterus. There are cysts, benign tumor, inflammation etc etc. So the best treatment for her is to remove the whole uterus with the ovaries. What you will see, will be 100% totally different from what you watch from Grey’s anatomy except for the knowledge of course. I’m sure what I learn here is sufficient enough to be a good doctor. (Hey, I could give the correct diagnosis when my roomate is sick! It’s just that I don’t know how to treat yet mah.)

Oh yea, a lot of people haven’t seen me in surgical scrub. Hehehe since ah jie today mood very good because finish 1 exam already, took a picture for you to see.

yy-in-scrubs.JPG

Lenglui or not? Cute ler? (Hehehehe *cough cough *perasan sendiri) Tell u a secret. Wanna know how I seduce attract my bf? Ngek ngek ngek the secret lies behind this surgical scrub and mask. He thinks my eyes look very seducing and sexy wor. So girls who desperately in need of a bf… wan me to lend u a help ma? I can lend u my scrub~

Guys usually fantasize about nurses, japanese girls which cosplay nurses. What about doctors ler? Why no one ever think about doctor? We got a lot of lenglui in medic school also wat. Not all of us got geeky looking wan ok? I shall find one day to post all the lenglui pic here.

russian-ot1.JPG

Here is the washing room. Hehehe, wonder why it looks so different from Grey’s anatomy series ler? Yeala, u must remember russia was once a communist country. So now the rich are very rich, the poor are very poor. In other states except Moscow, will be underdeveloped and in poor condition. See… even all the sterilised things are put in some ciplak pasar malam kind of basin.

russian-ot2.JPG

Entering the OT. Don’t be shock. Eeerhh… it’s just like that lor. Not as posh and beautiful and as high tech as those you saw from Grey’s anatomy. (SJMC’s OT was 100 times much better than this.) Now you know why I very scared to fall sick here lor because I don’t want to be treated here. Not the doctors problem but the condition of medical equipment here.

russian-ot3.JPG

The guy on the left side is my teacher, Dr. Konoplya. Very eng tao oh I tell you! He’s tall. Skin is so smooth and fair… I want to touch his face so much! (Of course la, his lao po also very tall and lenglui and she’s a dermatologist ma, dat’s why take care of hubby skin until so nice lor) Hehehe… notice the way they dressed? Yea… they don’t have money to waste on new surgical coat each time. So they use these cloth recycle wan. After done operation, take out to wash then sterilised and wear again. And it repeats again and again until it turned yellow. EEEwwwwwhhhhh. (Reason No.2 why I dun wan to get sick here!)

russian-ot4.JPG

Here, even the table for surgical instrument also covered but such cloth. Lol. See the cloth covering the patient’s body? Also use this kind of recycle cloth.

russian-ot5.JPG

Oh look, look here! Remember all the IV bottles in hospital usually come in plastic bottles? In Russia, to save cost, it come in glass bottle so that they can go refill again after using it. Even the medicine in liquid form also put in such bottle. I was sick before. Had skin allergy, the doctor prescribe me some drug, went to the pharmacist, they gave me the liquid in such glass bottle… in the end I didn’t take that drug at all. (Reason no.3 why I refuse to get sick here!)

russian-ot6.JPG

There’s a reason why I strongly recommend our government send us to space lor. See, even in OT they were trained to dressed up like astronaut! Lol. Also to save cost. They wrap from head to toe with the same recycle cloth.

russian-ot7.JPG
This is a very very old ventilator. I think it’s about 50 years old or more? But it’s still working though. See, we don’t have those very cool equipment like those in grey’s anatomy. (Reason no.4 why I don’t want to be treated here >.<)

russian-ot8.JPG
This is how we learn. Group all together inside the OT and watch and learn. The hospital is poor mah so don’t have another special room for you to view the operation in progress. Cincai one of us sneeze hor, can spread bacteria to the patient with where ever her body area are cut opened. Then will have septicemia and will have post-operative complication. There’s a sri lankan student here undergo an operation to remove kidney stones. And then the stones are successfully remove but later he got kidney failure because of post-operative infection! And now he need to do dialysis every week! (This is reason no.5 and the MAIN reason why I very scared to fall sick and to be treated here lor!)

You people in M’sia are so damn lucky, u know? Our medical facilities though not the best in the world but it is still better than those in Russia a zillion times. So count your blessing and thank God for letting you live in M’sia.

  • Oh wow, it’s amazing to see the difference in procedures. Here in the US, everything is disposable. Nothing is reused.

Thanks for sharing…here’s to hoping you stay healthy. ;)

u look like kakashi :P should cover 1 eye. *^.^*

  • Thanks for the insights, I appreciate it :)

  • Very enlightening post!

  • Operating room…sweat sweat. :P

  • wow, the ot there seems very antique.
just like one of those in horrow films.(just kidding)
People in Malaysia should be grateful for the facilities we get here and stop complaining bout poor service at government hospital.

I have gone thru my gynae posting and now doing surgery.
So, now i too has to visit OT quite often.

  • medicboyz: Accepting our drawback and tolerating our drawback are different. We may accept that Malaysia medical facility is at least better than Russia, but it is by no means we should let it be. Do remember this world is progressive. Perhaps, Russia is slowly improving as well. Now if we “stop complaining”, then soon Russia may be better than us too.

So IMHO, from this post we gain insight to the conditions in Kursk where Yuin Yin is in, but we shouldn’t let it give us a reason to sit dormant in our comfort zones.

People complain because they have seen better. Just as Yuin Yin is now complaining about Russia because she has seen Malaysia. Now what if Russians go to a totally undeveloped country and say, “wah we’re so advanced!” won’t you laugh at them? So similarly, more advanced countries would laugh at us if we simply tolerate our condition.

  • In continuation of my previous comment, countries such as England and US complaining about Malaysia is the same as Yuin Yin now complains about Russia. So we shouldn’t compare with weaker counterparts, instead we must look at the better countries and see how we may improve. If Yuin Yin does not complain about Russia, and no one does, do you think Russians will get anywhere if no one tells them about the world out there? So Malaysians complaining about Malaysia are just doing the same thing, they want Malaysia to improve.

  • Another point I want to state. My friend, John Ling, would agree with me. When judging the condition of Malaysian government hospitals, a doctor’s perspective and experience is very different from the patient.

My friend, John Ling’s father supplies medical equipments to the government for many years. And both father and son has seen the many faces of our hospitals.

A lot of people are suffering in there. If we simply tolerate our shortcomings, we are doing great injustic to the many under-privileged people suffering in government hospitals.

  • Even with the right facility, but with the wrong mentality (doctors, nurses, medical assistants) the situation is just as bad, or even worse.

  • One example would be India. Their facility is very poor, so as hygiene. But they produce many, many good doctors, and they have done many, many successful surgeries. Can we then judge a place based on one perspective alone? So we must understand why Russia is the way it is, and try to understand.

The sad fact is, even with Malaysia’s best equipments, we are still far behind compared to india’s medical expertise. If you say it is due to our bureaucracy and corruption, then you are already thinking. India also has it’s own share of problems. I always tell people that circumstances are just circumstances. It is what we do about it that matters. But by not complaining, it is the end of all hopes.

  • Lest anyone thinks I am comparing Malaysia to India, I am not. I am giving India as an example, to show that when commenting on a situation, it is important to consider the contributing factors, Don’t simply compare at face value and say, “oh, at least we are better.” That sounds like ego-centricism to me.

  • Yvonne,
wow, it seems like my comment does stimulate a lot of thoughts from you.
    haha!
well, i do agree that we should not stay static and statisfy with current condition.
In fact, we should always progress with time.
One way to do this is by complaining.
But I can think of another more wise and polite way, which is to give suggestion.
Yet most of the time, people will include the feeling of anger into the giving suggestion, and thus produce “complaint”.
Whenever someone complaints, it hurts both the giving and receiving parties.
    So, why complaint?
Does complaint makes thing solved faster and more effective?

  • Wah… I thought you go there to study… but you took lots of pictures instead. Haha :)

But sure thanks for the insights, the equipments sure look old and run down!

  • arrghhh… blood blood…

    *fainted*

  • =_=” din mean to compare. But seriously medical facilities here are bad and most patient were left to wait for death.

  • I thought the post was very informative :)

  • chocolate_pig

I think sending yuinyin to kursk study is a good idea. who knows she is sent to save those suffer in war, might need these skills in operation. somemore, theres still a lot countries lack of OT equipment. and yet, training these method would save life when out of sudden the hospital no electricity. :P

  • Jiejie YY :)

    how are you?

  • medicboyz: You have a point there. Constructive criticism is welcomed anytime.
